With regard to telemedicine, credentialing and privileges primarily deals with issues around a provider employed by a given hospital, providing services via telemedicine to a distant practice site, through a contractual relationship with an outside facility/hospital. In general, the hospital receiving telehealth services may opt to perform their own, local credentialing and privileging process. However, CMS has approved regulations allowing for a “credentialing by proxy” process that allows carry-over of the provider’s credentials from their primary/home institution as long as certain conditions are met.
