MAJOR FEATURES OF TRAINING PROGRAM:
A two to three-year fellowship program, which meets the requirements of, and is accredited by, the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada for Infectious Diseases. Training includes one year of clinical consult service, of which six weeks is on an adult service, and the remainder pediatric; six months of clinical microbiology and six months of research and elective. The program is fully integrated with the Adult ID and Medical Microbiology training programs, with combined academic rounds and teaching sessions, and serves a pediatric hospital with 150 beds and two adult hospitals with approximately 1500 beds. In addition to pediatric staff, there are 11 adult consultants with expertise in epidemiology, pharmacology, intensive care, virology, and molecular biology. The University of Manitoba and the Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases have a long-standing involvement in Global Health and trainees in this program may participate in a number clinical and research opportunities in existing overseas projects. Fellows in Pediatric Infectious Diseases also have the option of enrolling in a combined Pediatric ID and Medical Microbiology fellowship or a combined Pediatric ID fellowship/PhD program.

The Infectious Diseases Service is the primary care provider for HIV-infected children and adolescents: Primary care for HIV-infected children and adolescents is provided by general pediatricians; however, all HIV-infected children and adolescents are seen for regular follow-up in the out-patient ID clinic every 3 months.
