MAJOR FEATURES OF TRAINING PROGRAM: Our two or three year program is geared to prepare trainees for a research-oriented academic career in pediatric infectious disease. Training opportunities are offered in epidemiology, clinical research and laboratory research. Laboratory-based research deals with host response to various pathogens: B. pertussis, L. monocytogenes, E. coli, T. spiralis, parainfluenza viruses, RSV, and to endotoxin. In addition, the mechanisms of inflammation, leukocyte migration, the role of cytokines and adhesion molecules are being assessed in animal models of autoimmune diseases and asthma. Clinical research includes multicentre vaccine trials, studies of pertussis treatment and prevention organized from our centre, and hospital infection control projects. For research-based trainees, clinical rotation will be restricted to four months annually. We are accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a pediatric infectious fellowship training program.
