MAJOR FEATURES OF TRAINING PROGRAM: Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Northwell Health is a 202 bed tertiary children’s hospital and the largest provider of pediatric health services in New York State. It serves approximately 1.8 million children from two major boroughs of New York City – Brooklyn and Queens as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties of Long Island.
Our pediatric infectious diseases program serves an exceptionally diverse patient population of varied ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic status due to our unique geographic location. This diversity exposes trainees to rare and complex cases that are increasingly relevant in our globalized healthcare environment. The program provides comprehensive training in managing both immunocompetent and immunocompromised children and includes healthy children with common and unusual infections to complex immunocompromised hosts. The immunocompromised patient population includes children with malignancies, solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, primary immuno-deficiencies, and those receiving immunosuppressive therapy.
As a level 1 trauma center with large pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, we provide trainees with unparalleled experience managing complicated infections and critically ill patients. Our robust outpatient services encompass evaluations for prolonged fevers, post hospitalization follow up, management of chronic and recurrent infections in immunocompromised and a high-volume international travel clinic serving families from diverse global regions. Trainees utilize our state-of-the-art clinical microbiology laboratory with cutting edge diagnostic methodologies, ensuring accurate timely diagnosis. Over three years fellows gain expertise in clinical care, research methodology, infection control, and antimicrobial stewardship preparing them for successful academic careers in infectious diseases.
