Pediatric cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. have now reached levels seen during the 2020-2021 winter surge. About 204,000 cases were recorded in the week ending Aug. 26, the second week with child cases at the level of the previous winter surge, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which is collaborating with the Children’s Hospital Association to collect and share all publicly available state-level data on pediatric COVID-19 cases. After declining earlier in the summer, cases in children have increased exponentially, rising from about 38,000 cases for the week ending July 22 to nearly 204,000 for the week ending Aug. 26, a more than five-fold increase in the past month. Nearly 4.8 million children in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
