Member Spotlight: Dr. David Hyun

David Hyun, MD, is the director of the Antibiotic Resistance Project at The Pew Charitable Trusts, a non-profit, non-partisan policy research organization. The Antibiotic Resistance Project conducts research and advocacy that support policies that remove regulatory obstacles and create economic incentives for the innovation of new antibiotics and ensure antibiotic stewardship in healthcare and animal agriculture. Dr. Hyun’s current work includes the development and implementation of public health policies that will spur widespread adoption of antibiotic stewardship in outpatient settings, research on the role of public and private payers for supporting outpatient stewardship.  His work also includes refining existing policies to ensure hospital stewardship programs are supported to conduct meaningful surveillance and stewardship activities and advocating for legislative solutions to reinvigorating the antibiotic pipeline.

Dr. Hyun completed his undergraduate training at the University of Minnesota and received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at Indiana University / Riley Hospital for Children and his infectious diseases fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine. After completing fellowship training, Dr. Hyun spent seven years as an assistant professor at Children’s National Medical Center, where he developed and co-chaired the antibiotic stewardship program. During that time, he also served on the PIDS Pediatric Committee on Antimicrobial Stewardship which led to his interests in leveraging public health policies to promote antibiotic stewardship and joining Pew. He says, “My training and background as a pediatric infectious diseases physician continues to be invaluable assets in my current role of examining and advocating policies. It frequently allows me to provide clinical practice perspectives to the discussions on what types of support and resources are needed to address antibiotic resistance.”

Dr. Hyun also served on the PIDS Program and Meetings Committee and PIDS Chair for the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting. He currently serves as the PIDS Chair for IDWeek.
