PIDS Statement Regarding Measles Deaths in Pennsylvania

“The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) extends its deepest condolences to the families and communities of the two individuals in Pennsylvania who have died during the ongoing measles outbreak. These deaths – the first in the US this year and the first in Pennsylvania in 35 years – represent a deeply troubling milestone and underscore the devastating consequences of a vaccine-preventable disease.

“The deaths serve as a sobering reminder that measles is not a benign childhood illness. It is a highly contagious infection that can cause pneumonia, encephalitis, hospitalization, permanent disability, and, as in this situation, death. These outcomes are especially tragic as measles is preventable.

“Two doses of the MMR vaccine, which provide approximately 97% protection against measles and have an established record of safety and effectiveness spanning decades, helped the U.S. gain measles elimination status in 2000. That achievement is sadly now in jeopardy as measles once again menaces communities across the country.

“Vaccination remains our most effective tool for preventing measles and its potentially devastating complications. Families deserve clear, consistent, evidence-based information about how to protect their children. PIDS strongly urges parents and caregivers to ensure that children are up to date on their MMR vaccination, as well as other recommended vaccinations.

“Diseases that vaccines made uncommon have not become harmless. We must remain vigilant. We must not allow preventable illness and death to become commonplace again. PIDS will continue to advocate for the access and use of the MMR vaccine as the surest way to keep children and communities safe from further suffering.”
